This was the first and best game bought for my Commodore Amiga 500+. I remember spending literal hours walking Guybrush around Monkey Island not realising that I had to "Look at" the noteworthy rock for it to become flint.
To see The Secret of Monkey Island remastered in this way has been joyous for the feelings of nostalgia it brings. The pirate insults. Haggling with Stan. The notes the Cannibals leave for Herman over the Island. This game is not affected by the rose-tinted glasses of an idealised time - it really was that good.
But the novelty of the new version does wear off quickly. In the same way a shot-for-shot remake can leave one feeling unfulfilled, seeing Guybrush repainted in pretty colours is nice, but not breath taking. Also the voice dialogue doesn't feels as sharp and laugh out loud funny as it seemed to be reading it with my inner voice.
No doubt this project was geared toward profit making over nostalgia on the part of Lucasarts and the likelihood is that there is more to come. For me however, the Sales pitch works. I'd happily put a request in for a 21st Century Zak McKraken or Maniac Mansion and relive my childhood for a few hours.
